Boston Sign Project, (in relation to the Prudential Center, Boston) city wide installation of hand printed signs
In these portrayals of the city, I have reduced the urban landscape to a series of lines and forms, much akin to the pictogram aesthetic that one may find on a sign- meant to communicate effectively and quickly.
Filtering out the noise of text, commotion and other details found in the actual landscape, this process uses a symbol based, semiotic approach to represent urban space, still recognizable when confronted by the viewer (or city dweller) as the place they are currently occupying.
By re-placing these images within the original site from which the landscape image was captured, the viewer's relationship to the place is questioned. It is through the juxtaposition of the real and signed space that I create a context for these signs that questions the dichotomy between three-dimensional and two-dimensional space.
